Microwave porridge
Preparation time: 4 minutes
A filling breakfast or after-school snack. This microwave version is faster and easier than the stovetop.
Cooking directions
- Mix rolled oats and water in a bowl (use a large bowl to prevent spilling over when cooking).
- Cook uncovered in the microwave on medium power for 1 1/2 minutes.
- Stir.
- Cook for another minute.
- Serve porridge on its own or with your favourite topping (eg sliced banana, sultanas, tinned or fresh fruit, chopped dates, yoghurt or wheatgerm).
Try:
- Mixing the ingredients the night before and leaving to stand - this saves time in the morning and makes a creamier porridge. The rolled oats will absorb the water overnight so you'll need to add more water in the morning.
- Using half milk and half water for a creamier porridge.
- Cooking on the stovetop - mix rolled oats and water in saucepan, cook over medium heat until it boils (keep an eye on it and stir often so it doesn't stick to the bottom of the pot and burn).
